Authenticity vs. Popularity

What really is authenticity? Perhaps some words that come to mind are real, transparent; genuine. Authenticity means matching outer expression and inner experience. As many of you know we're creating a small boutique portrait studio (more to come on the progress soon), and I've been thinking a lot about what I want to accomplish with it. On social media there are many wildly popular photographers who have mastered the art of studio portraits. I find myself lured in by their muted colors, boho wardrobes and happy families, but there's something I notice...they all look the same. They are indeed beautiful but I can't help but feel, something is missing. So one day I asked myself, is this what I want to accomplish with my studio? It's really not. So how can I prevent my photos from all looking the same but still stay true to my brand? I began seeking out other studio photographers and found a handful who manage to bring characteristics of the individual into photos so beautifully. I was inspired. It became clear to me. I want to make heirloom worthy photos of people in an environment where they feel comfortable and authentic. I want them to feel like themselves only extra special on portrait day. So I made the decision to keep it simple! While I do plan to offer some basic wardrobe options for clients, I don't want that to be the central focus of the portrait session experience; no pun intended. I want clients to feel free to utilize my wardrobe or not, but either way to express their own personal style. To some degree photos that come from a studio session are going to be fairly uniform and consistent and that's one of the advantages of shooting in a controlled environment. But my goal will be to break the mold and find ways to make each experience unique. My desire after all, is for the client's outer expression to match their inner experience and to capture the authenticity that makes them unique and tells their personal story. What do you look for in a portrait session? I'd sure love to hear your thoughts! I'm really excited about what we're doing with the studio and I can't wait for you to see the end result. In the meantime, I'm trying hard to become more consistent with blogging and social media marketing. Thank you for being patient with me! Please reach out to give feedback, make suggestions, or simply say hello and tell me how you are! I look forward to hearing from you soon!
